Rovers On This Day – Sept

Today we continue our new monthly feature by seeing what happened ‘on this day’ in September.

SEPTEMBER 1ST

Happy Birthday to former Rovers midfielder Jamie Shore, born on this day in 1977.

Thomas Baker made his Rovers debut on this day in 1962, a 5-2 defeat against Wrexham at the Racecourse Gound.

On this day in 1990 Bob Bloomer made his Rovers debut, in a 2-1 home win against Charlton Athletic.

On this day in 2001 Elvis Hammond made his Rovers debut in a goalless draw against Shrewsbury Town at the Memorial Stadium.

In 2018 on this day goalkeeper Jack Bonham made his Rovers debut, also in a game against Shrewsbury Town. That match ended 1-1.

SEPTEMBER 2ND

Happy Birthday to former Rovers players Dominic Blizzard and Sergio Ommel. Dominic was born on this day in 1983 and Sergio in 1977.

Matt Hayfield and Mike Wyatt made their Rovers debuts on this day in 1995 in a 2-1 home defeat at the hands of Wrexham.

SEPTEMBER 3RD

Happy Birthday to former Rovers players Wilf Smith and Lamar Powell. Wilf was born on this day in 1946, Lamar on this day in 1993.

Francis McCourt made his Rovers debut in a 3-1 away defeat against Southend United on this day in 1949.

Harvey Sinclair made his one and only Rovers appearance on this day in 1958, a 3-2 away defeat against Derby County.

Tony Taylor’s Rovers debut came in 1977, a 3-1 defeat against Blackpool at Bloomfield Road.

Eleven years later, in 1988, it was the turn of Paul Smith to make his Rovers debut. Rovers were beaten 4-1 by Sheffield United, at Bramall lane, on that occasion.

Michael Leary’s Rovers debut was on this day in 2005 in a 3-2 win against Leyton Orient at Brisbane Road.

Rickie Lambert’s first game for The Gas was on this day in 2006 when he faced one of his former clubs, Stockport County, at Edgeley park. Rovers lost 2-1 that afternoon.

In 2011 on this day Danny Woodards made his Rovers debut in a 4-1 defeat at Crawley Town.

SEPTEMBER 4TH

Happy Birthday to the following former Rovers players; Darren Carr, born on this day in 1968,

Michael Smith and Mustapha Carayol were both born on this day in 1988, while Charlie Clough arrived in the world on this day in 1990. Ryan Broom and Charlie Colkett also share a birthday, both being born on this day in 1996.

In 1957 Ray Mabbutt made his Rovers debut on this day in a 2-1 defeat against Derby County at the Baseball Ground.

On this day in 1965 John Petts played his first game in a Rovers shirt, a 2-0 defeat against Mansfield Town at Field Mill.

Lee Archer’s Rovers debut was on this day in 1991 when Rovers were beaten 1-0 by Bristol City at Ashton Gate.

Goalkeeper Mike Green and John Akinde both made their Rovers debuts on this day in 2010 when we collected a point from a 1-1 draw against Oldham Athletic at Boundary Park.

SEPTEMBER 5TH

Happy Birthday to former Rovers midfielder Andy Reece, born on this day in 1962.

In 1949 on this day Thomas James made his Rovers debut in a 2-1 home win against Reading when he also scored a debut goal.

We go back to 1953 for Charles Cairney’s Rovers debut on this day, when Rovers recorded a 3-0 away win against Doncaster Rovers.

On this day in 1982 Archie Stephens made his Rovers debut in a 2-0 defeat at Chesterfield.

Goalkeeper Mikkel Andersen and midfielder Mark Wright first appeared in a Rovers shirt on this day in 2009 when we beat Millwall 2-0 at the Memorial Stadium.

SEPTEMBER 6TH

Former Rovers player Tony Taylor was born on this day in 1946.

Former Rovers midfielder Byron Stevenson died on this day in 2007.

Geoff Twentyman’s Rovers debut was on this day in 1986, a 1-0 defeat by York City at Bootham Crescent.

Jo Kuffour’s Rovers debut came in an amazing game against Peterborough United at London Road on this day in 2008 when Rovers were beaten 5-4.

SEPTEMBER 7TH

On this day in 1963 John Brown made his Rovers debut in a 2-2 draw against Peterborough United at London Road and he scored both Rovers goals that day.

Goalkeeper John Vaughan, along with John Scales and Tony Obi, all made their Rovers debut on this day in 1985, a 3-0 away defeat against Newport County.

SEPTEMBER 8TH

Happy Birthday to Howard Radford, born on this day in 1930. He is the second oldest member of the Bristol Rovers Former Players Association (BRFPA), being just a few years younger than Josser Watling.

Another BRFPA member, former Rovers skipper Vaughan Jones, also celebrates his birthday today. He was born on this day in 1959.

Birthday greetings, also, to the following former Rovers players; Mike Green (1946), Robbie Pethick (1970), Martin Margetson (1971), Richard Rose (1982), Andy Sandell (1983) and Charlie Reece (1988).

David Lawrence made the first of his five Rovers appearances against Middlesbrough on this day in 1956, a game Rovers lost 3-2 at Ayresome Park.

Jamie Shore’s Rovers debut was on this day in 1998, a goalless draw at Chesterfield.

Christer Warren played the first of his two games for Rovers on this day in 2002 when we were beaten 2-1 at Moss Rose by Macclesfield Town.

SEPTEMBER 9TH

Happy Birthday to the following former Rovers players born on this day; Wayne Carlisle (1979), Carl Regan (1980) and Jordan Goddard (1993).

Happy Birthday, also, to current Rovers midfielder Kyle Bennett who was born on this day in 1990.

David Whyte, who made four substitute appearances for Rovers, died on this day in 2014.

Goalkeeper Alexis Andre Junior made his Rovers debut on this day in 2017 when he went on to replace Sam Slocombe following his red card. Ten man Rovers won 2-1 that day and the 28 minutes he spent between the posts that afternoon are, to date, the only first team minutes he has under his belt.

SEPTEMBER 10TH

Happy Birthday to the following former Rovers players born on this day; Stephen Badock (1958), David Clarkson (1985) and Eliot Richards (1991).

Wally McArthur, who played for Rovers both before and after the Second World War and was later the club’s assistant trainer and trainer, died on this day in 1980.

Phil Coggins made the first of his four Rovers appearances on this day in 1960, a 2-1 away defeat against Scunthorpe United.

Paul Hendrie and Mike Barry made their Rovers debuts on this day in 1977 when we lost 2-1 against Luton Town at Eastville.

 Three players, Charlie Colkett, Hiram Boateng and Kelle Roos all made their Rovers debuts on this day in 2016 when we drew 2-2 against Rochdale at the Memorial Stadium.

SEPTEMBER 11TH

Happy Birthday to former Rovers goalkeeper Lance Cronin, born on this day in 1985.

SEPTEMBER 12TH

Happy Birthday to former Rovers players Richie Partridge, born on this day in 1980 and to Mike Wyatt, born on this day in 1974.

Micky Barrett was born on this day in 1959 and Ian Hamilton was born on this day in 1940.

Goalkeeper Lee Nicholls, signed on loan from Wigan Athletic, made his Rovers debut on this day in 2015 against one of the clubs he had previously played for on loan, Accrington Stanley. Rovers lost the game 1-0 at the Memorial Stadium.

SEPTEMBER 13TH

Happy Birthday to the following former Rovers players born on this day; Bradley Allen (1971), Joe Gadston (1945), Lewis Hogg (1982) and Mark Smith (1979).

Former Rovers player and respected cricket umpire Barrie Meyer died on this day in 2015.

Fred Chadwick, who scored once in six Rovers games, made his debut against Brighton & Hove Albion on this day in 1947 and scored one of our goals in a 4-1 win at Eastville.

Byron Moore made his Rovers debut in a 1-1 draw against Walsall, at the Memorial Stadium, on this day in 2016.

SEPTEMBER 14TH

Happy Birthday to former Rovers player Martin Shaw, born on this day in 1960 and to goalkeeper Jack Bonham, born on this day in 1993.

Len Hodges made a Rovers goalscoring debut on this day in 1946, when Rovers beat Torquay United 3-0 at Eastville.

Phil Bater’s Rovers debut came on this day in 1974, a 2-0 win against Aston Villa at Eastville.

Gerry Francis made his Rovers debut on this day in 1985 in a goalless draw against Lincoln City. Later, of course, he was to enjoy two spells as Rovers manager and guided the club to promotion and a Wembley Final in 1989/90.

Former defender Steve Cross made his Rovers debut against Southend United on this day in 1991 when Rovers lost 2-0 at Roots Hall.

Andy Bond, now playing for York City, made his Rovers debut on this day in 2013, an away game against Dagenham & Redbridge which we lost 2-0.

SEPTEMBER 15TH

Happy Birthday to former Rovers players born on this day, namely; Brian Rideout (1940), Peter Cawley and Tony Obi (1965).

In 1954 on this day James Anderson made his Rovers debut in a 5-3 defeat against Liverpool at Anfield.

In 1979 on this day Shaun Penny made his Rovers debut in a 4-1 defeat against Cambridge United at the Abbey Stadium.

Ian McLean made his Rovers debut on this day in 1993 in a 1-1 draw against Exeter City at Twerton Park.

SEPTEMBER 16TH

Happy Birthday to former Rovers midfielder Phil Purnell, born on this day in 1964.

On this day in 1989 Tony Sealy made his Rovers debut in a 3-0 home win against Preston North End.

In 2000 on this day, goalkeeper Matt Glennon made his one and only Rovers appearance in a goalless draw against Wigan Athletic at the Memorial Stadium.

Marc Bola, now with Middlesbrough, made his Rovers debut on this day in 2017 in a 3-0 defeat against Wigan Athletic at the JJB Stadium.

SEPTEMBER 17TH

On this day in 1968 goalkeeper Ray White made the first of his three Rovers appearances in a 2-2 draw against Northampton Town.

Another former Rovers goalkeeper, Harry Liley, died on this day in 2001.

SEPTEMBER 18TH

Happy Birthday to former Rovers striker Robbie Turner, born on this day in 1966.

Fred Chadwick, a former Rovers striker, died on this day in 1987.

Nicky Platnauer made his Rovers debut on this day in 1982 in a 2-1 home defeat at the hands of Lincoln City.

Garry Kenneth’s Rovers debut was on this day in 2012 in a 1-1 draw against Plymouth Argyle at Home Park.

SEPTEMBER 19TH

Happy Birthday to former Rovers players born on this day; Steve Morgan (1968), Scott Bevan (1979) and Chris Carruthers (1983).

Chris Dickson made his Rovers debut on this day in 2009, scoring twice in a 3-1 win against Brentford at Griffin Park.

SEPTEMBER 20TH

Happy Birthday to former Rovers defender Byron Anthony, born on this day in 1984 and to former goalkeeper Anthony Williams, born on this day in 1977.

SEPTEMBER 21ST

Former Rovers goalkeeper Jack Weare was born on this day in 1912.

Charles ‘Chic’ Cairney, who scored once in 14 Rovers games, was born on this day in 1926.

Happy Birthday to Scott Rendell, now playing for Eastleigh, who was born on this day in 1986.

Happy Birthday, also, to Kayne McLaggon, born on this day in 1990.

On this day in 1985 Trevor Morgan made his Rovers debut in a 1-0 home defeat at the hands of Walsall.

Jamie Cureton made his Rovers debut in a 1-0 win against Plymouth Argyle at Home Park on this day in 1996. Graeme Power also made his Rovers debut in the same game.

He didn’t appear in a League game for Rovers, but on this day in 2004 Jon Beswetherick made his senior Rovers debut in a League Cup Tie against Norwich City at Carrow Road. Rovers lost 1-0.

SEPTEMBER 22ND

Happy Birthday to former Rovers players Jake Clarke-Salter, currently on loan at Birmingham City and Alex Wall, who signed for Hemel Hempstead Town in the summer. Jake was born on this day in 1997, Alex on this day in 1990.

Former Rovers player Roy McCrohan was born on this day in 1930.

On this day in 1962 Jimmy Humes made his Rovers debut in a 1-1 draw against Brighton & Hove Albion.

Current Cardiff City goalkeeper Neil Etheridge made his Rovers debut on this day in 2012 in a goalless draw against Fleetwood Town at the Memorial Stadium.

SEPTEMBER 23RD

Happy Birthday to former Rovers midfielder and current Development Coach Lee Mansell, born on this day in 1982.

Happy Birthday to former Rovers players Richard Plumb and Shaun Penny. Richard was born on this day in 1946 and Shaun on this day in 1957.

Former Rovers forward Frank Curran died on this day in 1998.

On this day in 1949 striker Geoff Bradford made the first of his 461 Rovers league appearances in a 1-0 defeat at Crystal Palace.

SEPTEMBER 25TH

Happy Birthday to former Rovers defender Jim Paterson, born on this day in 1979 and to former striker Jon French, born on this day in 1976.

Former Rovers players James Anderson (1932) and Kenneth Powell (1924) were also born on this day.

John McIlvenny, who scored 11 goals in 79 Rovers appearances, died on this day in 2006.

Ray Graydon made his Rovers debut on this day in 1965, a 3-0 defeat against Swansea at the Vetch Field.

Goalkeeper Allen Clarke made his one and only Rovers appearance on this day in 1971 as Rovers beat Notts County 3-2 at Meadow Lane.

Jeff Sherwood’s Rovers debut was on this day in 1982, when Rovers drew 2-2 against Preston North End at Deepdale.

In 1999 on loan goalkeeper Stuart Taylor made his Rovers debut in a 2-0 win against Notts County at Meadow Lane.

Ian Wright made his Rovers debut on this day in 1993 in a 3-1 win against Burnley at Twerton Park.

SEPTEMBER 26TH

Philip Kenan Dunwald-Turan made his only Rovers appearance when going on as a second half substitute in a 3-0 defeat against Portsmouth at Fratton Park.

SEPTEMBER 27TH

Happy Birthday to the following former Rovers players born on this day; Ken Ronaldson (1945), Paul Lewis (1956) and Paul Petts (1961)

Geoff Fox made his Rovers debut on this day in 1947 in a 2-0 home defeat at the hands of Bristol City.

Goalkeeper Nicky Hammond’s Rovers debut came in a 2-2 draw against Blackpool on this day in 1986 while Lewis Haldane’s first appearance in a Rovers shirt came in 2003 in a 2-0 home win against Cheltenham Town.

James Walker made his Rovers debut on this day in 2006 in a 2-1 home win against Hereford United, while Jake Clarke-Salter’s Gas debut was on this day in 2016 when we were beaten 1-0 by Sheffield United at Bramall Lane.

SEPTEMBER 28TH

Happy Birthday to former Rovers players Keith Brown and Marcus Law. Keith was born on this day in 1959, Marcus on this day in 1975.

Former Rovers striker Douglas Baldie made his debut against Bristol City on this day in 1946 when City won 3-0.

Kevin Austin [R.I.P.] made his Rovers debut on this day in 2002, a 2-1 home defeat at the hands of Kidderminster Harriers.

SEPTEMBER 29TH

Happy Birthday to two former Rovers goalkeepers born on this day; Gavin Kelly (1968) and Aaron Chapman (1990).

Tom Eaves and Derek Riordan both made their Rovers debuts on this day in 2012 in a 2-1 win against Exeter City at St James’ Park.

SEPTEMBER 30TH

Happy Birthday to the following former Rovers players born on this day; Adrian Coote (1978), Sammy Igoe (1975), Trevor Morgan (1956) and John-Joe O’Toole (1988).

Bryn Jones made his Rovers debut on this day in 1969 when he was one of three players named Jones in the side that beat Tranmere Rovers 3-0 at Eastville.

There were two Rovers debuts on this day in 2000 when Moussa Dagnogo and Dwayne Plummer appeared in a 3-3 draw against Luton Town at the Memorial Stadium.
