Rovers On This Day – October

Today we continue our new monthly feature by seeing what happened ‘on this day’ in October.

OCTOBER 1ST

Happy Birthday to Tom Hitchcock, born on this day in 1992. Tom is now playing for Bedford Town in the Southern League Division One Central Division.

Former Rovers striker Ted Purdon made his league debut for the club on this day in 1960, a 4-2 win against Swansea Town at Eastville.

Now starring for Swansea City and Wales, defender Connor Roberts made his Rovers debut on this day in 2016. Rovers were 3-2 winners at Northampton Town.

OCTOBER 2ND

Happy Birthday to the three former Rovers players born on this day; John Anderson (1972), John Petts (1938) and Sam Walker (1991).

OCTOBER 3RD

Happy Birthday to former Rovers players Ron Green and Andrew Evans born on this day in 1956 & 1957 respectively.

Former Rovers defender Alex Munro was born on this day in 1944.

Striker Ray Seatherton, who scored in both of his Rovers league appearances, died on this day in 2011.

OCTOBER 4TH

Happy Birthday to former Rovers goalkeeper Will Puddy, born on this day in 1987.

Wayne Powell made a goalscoring debut for Rovers on this day in 1975 when Rovers were 4-2 winners against Nottingham Forest at Eastville.

Mark Johns also made a goalscoring Rovers debut, on this day in 1986, when we beat Chesterfield 3-2 at Eastville.

OCTOBER 5TH

Happy Birthday to the following former Rovers players born on this day; Paris Cowan-Hall, now playing for Colchester United (1990), Lee Maddison (1972), Jeff Sherwood (1959), Paul Smith (1967) & Adam Dawson (1992).

Former Rovers goalkeeper Tim Carter was born on this day in 1967.

Two former Rovers players, George Peacock and George Petherbridge, made their debuts on this day in 1946. Southend United were Rovers’ opponents that day and they left Eastville with both points following a 3-1 win.

OCTOBER 6TH

Happy Birthday to four former Rovers players born on this day; Larry Lloyd (1948), Dave Staniforth (1950), Elvis Hammond (1980) and Graham Barrett (1981).

OCTOBER 7TH

Three former Rovers players celebrate birthdays today, so Happy Birthday to Alan Hoult (1957), Adam Cunnington (1987) and Daniel Leadbitter (1990). Former Coach. Caretaker manager/Assistant Manager/Manager Garry Thompson was born on this day in 1959.

Barrie Meyer made a goalscoring Rovers debut on this day in 1950 when we beat Bournemouth 2-0 at Eastville.

On this day in 1978 Gary Clarke made his Rovers debut in a 4-1 home win against Blackburn Rovers, a game in which Paul Randall scored a hat trick.

Current Rovers defender Rollin Menayese made his league debut for Rovers on this day in 2017, a 6-0 win against Northampton Town at Sixfields.

OCTOBER 8TH

Happy Birthday to the former Rovers players born on this day, namely; Malcolm Dalrymple (1951), Allan Cockram (1963), Christian Lee (1976), Matt Glennon (1978), Danny Woodards, who is now playing for National League side Boreham Wood (1983) and Joe Anyinsah (1984).

Goalkeeper Glyn Jones made his Rovers debut on this day in 1977, a 3-1 defeat against Burnley at Turf Moor.

Another goalkeeper, Marcus Law, played the first of his two league games for Rovers on this day in 1994 when we lost 3-0 at Brentford.

Scott Rendell, now playing for National League side Eastleigh, made his Rovers debut on this day in 2011, a game which ended in a 3-0 defeat against Oxford United at the Kassam Stadium.

OCTOBER 9TH

Happy Birthday to former Rovers players Alan Gow and Sam Oji. Alan was born on this day in 1982 while Sam, who plays for Highgate United in the Midland league, was born on this day in 1985.

OCTOBER 10TH

Happy Birthday to former Rovers defender Christer Warren, born on this day in 1974.

Rovers’ record appearance maker, Stuart Taylor, sadly died on this day in 2019.

OCTOBER 11TH

Happy Birthday to former Rovers players Graham Muxworthy, Carl Heggs and Alvin Bubb, born on this day in 1938, 1970 and 1980 respectively.

Former Rovers defender Henry Smith was born on this day in 1908 while another former Rovers defender, John Frowen, was born on this day in 1931.

OCTOBER 12TH

Happy Birthday to former Rovers player, and BRFPA member, Brian Parkin who was born on this day in 1965.

Brian shares his birthday with former Rovers defender Chris Plummer, born on this day in 1976.

Goalkeeper Harry Liley and Bert Winter-Alsop made their Rovers debuts on this day in 1946, a 2-0 away win against Queens Park Rangers.

OCTOBER 13TH

Happy Birthday to former Rovers players David Smith and Lee Zabek.

David was born on this day in 1964 and Lee on this day in 1978.

OCTOBER 14TH

Danny Allsopp made his Rovers debut on this day in 2000 in a 1-0 home defeat at the hands of Northampton Town.

Ollie Norburn’s first appearance in a Rovers shirt was on this day in 2011, a 5-2 home win against Rotherham United.

OCTOBER 15TH

Former Rovers player Peter Wilshire was born on this day in 1934. Former caretaker Manager Darren Patterson was born on this day in 1969.

George Collins made a goalscoring Rovers debut on this day in 1960, in a 3-1 win against Lincoln City at Eastville. It was one of only two league games he played for the club. Making his debut alongside him that day was Brian Rideout and that was his only league game for Rovers.

Bobby Gould scored a hat trick on his Rovers debut on this day in 1977 when Rovers were 4-1 home winners against Blackburn Rovers.

OCTOBER 16TH

Happy Birthday to former Rovers players David McCracken and Justin Richards.

David, a coach at Scottish League One side Peterhead, was born on this day in 1981, while Justin was born on this day in 1980.

Former Rovers player Norman Sykes was born on this day in 1936.

OCTOBER 17TH

Happy Birthday to former Rovers players Christian McClean, Matt Lockwood and Darren Jefferies.

Christian was born on this day in 1963, Matt on this day in 1976 and Darren on this day in 1993.

Former Rovers defender and current BRFPA President Billy Clark made his Rovers debut on this day in 1987 in a 2-2 draw at Twerton Park.

OCTOBER 18TH

Geraint Williams made his Rovers debut on this day in 1980, a 3-3 draw against Sheffield Wednesday at Eastville.

Shane Hobbs made two substitute league appearances for Rovers, the first of which came on this day in 2003 when Rovers suffered a 2-0 home defeat at the hands of Cambridge United.

Former Rovers goalkeeper, Dick Sheppard, died on this day in 1998.

OCTOBER 19TH

Happy Birthday to former Rovers players Mike Davis, born on this day in 1974 and Mike Trought, born on this day in 1980.

On this day in 1982 Mike Channon made his Rovers debut in a 4-0 home win against Millwall.

Gary Smart made his first appearance in a Rovers shirt on this day in 1985, a 2-0 win against Doncaster Rovers at Eastville.

David Francis Lee made five appearances for Rovers whilst on loan from Southend United, the first of those coming in a 2-2 draw against York City at Bootham Crescent on this day in 2002.

Two former Rovers players, Alex Henshall and Will Packwood, made their debuts on this day in 2013, a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Wycombe Wanderers at the Memorial Stadium.

OCTOBER 20TH

Happy Birthday to former Rovers players Wayne Jones, Ryan Green, Ben Swallow and Bradley Goldberg.

Wayne, whose career was cruelly cut short by injury, was born on this day in 1948 while Ryan, a member of the 2007 promotion winning team, was born on this day in 1980.

Ben, currently playing for Merthyr Town, was born on this day in 1989 and Bradley, now playing for Welling United, arrived in the world on this day in 1993.

OCTOBER 21ST

Happy Birthday to former Rovers players Harry Pell and John Rudge.

Harry, now with Colchester United, was born on this day in 1991, while John was born on this day in 1944.

OCTOBER 22ND

Happy Birthday to former Rovers players Rene Howe and Lee Portch.

Rene, now playing for Walton Casuals, was born on this day in 1986, while Lee was born on this day in 1966.

Former Rovers goalkeeper Andy Collett made his debut for the club on this day in 1994, and kept a clean sheet, in a 3-0 win against Brighton & Hove Albion at Twerton Park.

OCTOBER 23RD

Happy Birthday to these former Rovers players born on this day; Ray Cashley (1951), Trevor Challis (1975), Rory Gaffney (1989) and Andy Monkhouse (1980).

Rory and Andy are still playing, Rory for Walsall and Andy for Ossett United.

Neil Ross, on loan from Stockport County, made his Rovers debut on this day in 2001, a 1-0 defeat by Exeter City at Twerton Park.

OCTOBER 24TH

Happy Birthday to former Rovers goalkeeper, and BRFPA member, Malcolm Norman who was born on this day in 1934.

Happy Birthday, also, to former Rovers strikers Paul Tait and John Taylor. Paul was born on this day in 1974 and John ten years earlier on this day in 1964.

Another former Rovers striker, Vic Lambden, was born on this day in 1925.

Former Rovers midfielder Justin Channing made his league debut for the club on this day in 1992, a 2-1 defeat against Birmingham City at St Andrews.

OCTOBER 25TH

Happy Birthday to former Rovers striker Wayne Powell, born on this day in 1956.

He didn’t make a league appearance for the club, but Dominic Thomas made his senior Rovers debut in an FA Cup preliminary round game against Dorchester Town on this day in 2014 when Rovers won 7-1.

OCTOBER 26TH

Happy Birthday to the following former Rovers players born on this day; Phil Bater (1955), John Haworth (1965), Phil Kite (1962), Ollie Norburn (1992) and Keith Viney (1957).

On this day in 1968 Trevor Rhodes played the first of his two league games for Rovers, a goalless draw against Mansfield Town at Field Mill.

BRFPA member David Mehew made his Rovers debut on this day in 1985, three days before his 18th birthday.  It wasn’t a good day for The Gas, though, as we lost 6-1 against Bournemouth at Dean Court.

Adrian Coote, then on loan from Colchester United, made a goalscoring Rovers debut on this day in 2002. A 2-1 home defeat at the hands of Leyton Orient.

In 1996 on this day BRFPA member Tom Ramasut made his Rovers debut in a 2-1 defeat against Bury at Gigg Lane.

OCTOBER 27TH

On this day in 1951 former Rovers goalkeeper, and BRFPA member, Howard Radford made his debut against Southend United. Rovers lost 2-1 at Roots Hall that day and Howard would make another 244 league appearances for the club.

OCTOBER 28TH

Happy Birthday to former Rovers goalkeeper Andy Collett, born on this day in 1973.

Former Rovers player Bobby Jones was born on this day in 1938.

Jamal Easter made his Rovers league debut on this day in a 2-0 defeat against Wrexham at the Racecourse Ground.

OCTOBER 29TH

Happy Birthday to the following Rovers players born on this day; Sandy Allan (1947), Stewart Barrowclough (1951), Steve Elliott (1978), David Mehew (1967), Calum Willock (1981) and Chris Zebroski (1986).

Chris Zebroski is currently playing for Chippenham Town.

OCTOBER 30TH

Happy Birthday to former Rovers players born on this day; Mo Baghdadi (1996), Mark Foran (1973) and Liam Burns (1978) and Danny Coles (1981)

Liam actually made his Rovers debut on his 26th birthday, a 2-2 draw against Boston United at York Street.

Former Rovers defender Harry Bamford died on this day in 1958.

Former Rovers striker Tony Edge made his league debut on this day in 1959, a 1-1 draw against Cardiff City at Eastville.
