Rovers On This Day – November

Today we continue our new monthly feature by seeing what happened ‘on this day’ in November.

NOVEMBER 1ST

Happy Birthday to former Rovers players Jamie Forrester and Anwar Uddin, born on this day in 1974 and 1981 respectively.

Anwar is now assistant manager at National League side Aldershot Town.

Former goalkeeper Ronnie Briggs made his Rovers league debut on this day in 1965, a 1-0 defeat at Shrewsbury Town.

Former midfielder Ryan Williams first appeared for Rovers on this day in 2003 in a goalless away draw against Swansea City.

NOVEMBER 2ND

Former Rovers player Chris Beardsley, now with Burton Albion, made his Gas league debut on this day in 2013, a 1-0 win against Oxford United at the Kassam Stadium.

Bobby Jones made his Rovers league debut on this day in 1957. We beat Middlesbrough 5-0 that day and Bobby marked his debut by scoring twice.

Doug Hayward’s Rovers league debut came on this day in 1946, a 4-0 away defeat at the hands of Cardiff City.

Former Rovers stalwart Ray Mabbutt died on this day in 2016.

NOVEMBER 3RD

Happy Birthday to current Rovers players Abu Ogogo and Michael Kelly, born on this day in 1989 and 1997 respectively.

Danny Coles made his Rovers league debut on this day in 2007, a 2-0 home defeat at the hands of AFC Bournemouth.

Noel Parkinson’s Rovers league debut was on this day in 1979, a 3-1 home defeat at the hands of Queens Park Rangers.

NOVEMBER 4TH

Happy Birthday to former Rovers player Luke James, born on this day in 1994. Luke is now playing for Hartlepool United in the National League.

Jonathan French made his Rovers debut on this day in 1995, a 1-1 draw against Peterborough United at Twerton Park.

NOVEMBER 5TH

Happy Birthday to the following former Rovers players born on this day; Jeffrey Monakana (1993), David Pipe (1983), Dominic Telford (1996) and Brian Williams (1955).

Monakana is now playing for Dulwich Hamlet and Telford for Plymouth Argyle.

Former Rovers defender Terry Oldfield made his Gas league debut on this day in 1960, a 2-0 defeat against Sunderland at Roker Park.

NOVEMBER 6TH

Happy Birthday to the following former Rovers players born on this day; Lee Archer (1972), Les Bradd (1947) and Gary Clarke (1960).

Former Rovers defender Dave Bumpstead was born on this day in 1935.

Chris Weller and Bobby Zamora made their Rovers debuts on this day in 1965 and 1999 respectively. Chris played in goalless home draw against Gillingham while Bobby appeared in a 1-1 draw against Wycombe Wanderers at Adams Park.

NOVEMBER 7TH

Andy Tillson and Gary Waddock, both signed from Queens Park Rangers two days before, made their Rovers debuts on this day in 1992 in a 5-1 defeat against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux.

NOVEMBER 8TH

Happy Birthday to the following former Rovers players born on this day; Seanan Clucas (1992), Matt Gill (1980), Rob Quinn (1976), Marcus Stewart (1972) and Richard Walker (1977).

Clucas is now playing for Dungannon Swifts over in Ireland, Gill is assisting Paul Lambert at Ipswich Town and Stewart is assistant manager at Walsall.

Former Rovers striker Fred Chadwick was born on this day in 1913.

NOVEMBER 9TH

Happy Birthday to former Rovers midfielder Stuart Sinclair, born on this day in 1987. Stuart, of course, is now playing for Walsall.

Former Rovers goalkeeper John (Bob) Anderson was born on this day in 1924.

Fred Allaway made the first of his four Rovers league appearances on this day in 1946 against Norwich City, which ended in a 2-1 defeat at Eastville.

Bruce Bannister made his Rovers debut on this day in 1971, a 2-1 home defeat at the hands of Rotherham United.

Chris Plummer, on loan from Queens Park Rangers, made the first of his two Rovers league appearances on this day in 2002 against Southend who were 1-0 winners at the Memorial Stadium.

NOVEMBER 10TH

Happy Birthday to former Rovers players Graham Hyde and Gerry O’Brien, born on this day in 1970 and 1949 respectively.

Former Rovers player Douglas Baldie died on this day in 1998.

NOVEMBER 11TH

Former Rovers striker Rune Johansen made his Rovers debut on this day in 2000, a goalless draw against Walsall at the Memorial Stadium. It was the first of two substitute league appearances for the Gas.

Lyle Della-Verde, now playing for Hayes & Yeading United, was on loan from Fulham when he made his Rovers league debut in a goalless draw at Alfreton on this day in 2014. He had made his senior debut the previous weekend in a 1-0 defeat at Tranmere Rovers in the FA Cup.

NOVEMBER 12TH

Happy Birthday to the following Rovers players born on this day; Peter Higgins (1950), Andy Clement (1967), Pat Baldwin (1982) and Tyler Lyttle (1996).

Vic Barney made his Rovers debut on this day in 1966, a 1-0 home win against Torquay United.

Jordan Goddard never made a league appearance for Rovers, but on this day in 2011 he made his senior Rovers debut in a First Round FA Cup tie against Corby Town at the Memorial Stadium. Rovers won 3-1 that day.

NOVEMBER 13TH

Happy Birthday to former Rovers player Dennis Bailey, born on this day in 1965.

Former Rovers midfielder Harry Pell, now with Colchester United, made his Rovers debut on this day in 2010, a 3-0 home defeat at the hands of Leyton Orient.

Although he has yet to make his league debut for Rovers, Theo Widdrington made his senior debut against Exeter City on this day in 2018, a 2-0 defeat at Exeter City in the Football League Trophy. Theo is currently on loan at Welling United.

In that same game down at St James’ Park, Zain Walker also made his senior debut. He is still with Rovers but has yet to make his league debut.

NOVEMBER 14TH

Happy Birthday to former Rovers players Kenny Stephens and Keith Curle, born on this day in 1946 and 1963 respectively and to Philipp Keenan Dunnwald-Turan who was born on this day in 1995.

Curle is now Northampton Town’s manager while Stephens, now retired, lives in Hanham.

Former Rovers goalkeeper John (Bob) Anderson died on this day in 1994.

Mike Lyons made his Rovers league debut on this day in 1953, a 1-0 defeat against Swansea Town (as they were then) at Eastville.

NOVEMBER 15TH

Happy Birthday to former Rovers player Jamal Easter, born on this day in 1987.

Former Rovers player Paul Bannon was born on this day in 1956.

NOVEMBER 16TH

Happy Birthday to former Rovers players Mark McKeever and Noel Parkinson, born on this day in 1978 and 1959 respectively.

McKeever is now Weston super Mare’s Senior Phase Manager.

Henry Smith made his Rovers league debut on this day in 1946 in a 6-0 defeat at Notts County. Just past his 38th birthday, he is the oldest player to make his debut for the club.

NOVEMBER 17TH

Happy Birthday to the following former Rovers players born on this day; James Clarke (1989), Joe Jacobson (1986), Jo Kuffour (1981), Andy Spring (1965) and James White (1989).

Clarke is now playing for Walsall and Jacobson for Wycombe Wanderers.

Brian Carter, who appeared in four league games for Rovers, was born on this day in 1938, while Wilf Whitefield who appeared for Rovers both before and after World War Two, was born on this day in 1916.

Former Rovers goalkeeper Jack Weare died on this day in 1994.

NOVEMBER 18TH

Happy Birthday to former Rovers players Ray Guscott and Vic Barney, born on this day in 1957 and 1947 respectively.

Happy Birthday, also, to current Rovers manager Graham Coughlan born on this day in 1974.

Striker Peter Beadle made his Rovers debut on this day in 1995, a 1-1 draw against Wycombe Wanderers at Adams Park.

Midfielder Stuart Nicholson made his Rovers debut on this day in 2006, a 2-0 win against Bury at Gigg Lane.

NOVEMBER 19TH

Happy Birthday to former Rovers player Justin Channing, born on this day in 1968.

Happy Birthday, also, to current Rovers player Luke Leahy, born on this day in 1992.

Former Rovers player Roger Frude was born on this day in 1946.

Former Rovers players Wilf Whitfield and Frank Curran, who both played for Rovers either side of the Second World War, made their league debuts for the club on this day in 1938 against Swindon Town

Goalkeeper Shane Higgs made his Rovers debut on this day in 1996, a 2-1 home defeat at the hands of Burnley.

Andy Dorman, on loan from Crystal Palace, made his Rovers league debut on this day in 2011, a 2-0 defeat against Barnet.

NOVEMBER 20TH

Mark Walters made his Rovers league debut on this day in 1999, a 1-0 away win at Chesterfield.

Alefe Santos, currently playing for National League side Aldershot Town, made his Rovers league debut on this day in 2012, a 4-0 defeat against Port Vale at Vale Park.

NOVEMBER 21ST

Happy Birthday to former Rovers players Matt Lund and Michael Poke, born on this day in 1990 and 1985 respectively.

Lund is now playing for Scunthorpe United, though I’m not sure if Poke, whose last club seems to have been Woking, is still playing.

Happy Birthday, also, to current Rovers midfielder Ed Upson who was born on this day in 1989.

Pat Baldwin, then on loan from Colchester United, made the first of his six Rovers league appearances on this day in 2009, a 2-1 home win against Gillingham.

NOVEMBER 22ND

Happy Birthday to the former Rovers players born on this day; Graham Day (1953), Ansah Owusu (1979), Simon Bryant (1982) and Pat Keary (1993).

Bradley Goldberg and Nathan Blissett both made their Rovers debuts on this day in 2014, in a 2-2 draw at Chester where Blissett, who had scored for Kidderminster Harriers against Rovers the previous week, scored on his first Rovers appearance.

Blissett is currently with Solihull Moors, while Goldberg is with Welling United.

NOVEMBER 23RD

Happy Birthday to the following Rovers players born on this day; Laurie Taylor (1947), Bob Newton (1956), Christian Edwards (1975) and Adam Smith (1992) and Dominic Thomas (1995).

William Morgan made his Rovers debut in a 3-0 home defeat at the hands of Northampton Town on this day in 1946.

Jason Harris, then on loan from Crystal Palace, made his Rovers debut on this day in 1996, a 2-1 defeat against Luton Town at Kenilworth Road.

NOVEMBER 24TH

Happy Birthday to the following former Rovers players born on this day; Brian Cash (1982), Jason Harris (1976) and Kevin Westaway (1962).

Guy Branston made a goalscoring Rovers debut on this day in 2012, scoring against one of his former clubs, Bradford City, in a 3-3 draw at the Memorial Stadium.

Paris Cowan-Hall, on loan from Millwall, made the first of his three Rovers’ league appearances in a 2-1 home defeat against Stevenage on this day in 2015.

Colin Dobson made his Rovers debut on this day in 1972, a goalless draw against Southend United at Roots Hall.

Sergio Ommel’s first appearance in a Rovers shirt came on this day in 2001, a goalless draw at Hull City.

Former Rovers player Johnny Williams died on this day in 2011.

NOVEMBER 25TH

Happy Birthday to former Rovers players Wayne Andrews and Kevin Street, both born on this day in 1977 and to James Walker who was born on this day in 1987.

Brian Parkin kept a clean sheet on his first appearance for the Gas on this day in 1989, a 2-0 home win against Swansea City.

Angelo Balanta made a goalscoring debut against Barnet on this day in 2014 in a 2-1 win against Barnet at the Memorial Stadium.

NOVEMBER 26TH

Happy Birthday to former Rovers players born on this day; Tony Ford (1944), Craig Hinton (1977), David Lee (1969) and Carl Saunders (1964).

Former Rovers player Maurice Lockier was born on this day in 1924.

Ken Ronaldson made his Rovers debut on this day in 1965, a 1-0 defeat against Exeter City at St James’Park.

NOVEMBER 28TH

Happy Birthday to former Rovers players born on this day; Chic Bates (1949), Mike Channon (1948), Martin Thomas (1959) and goalkeeper Stuart Taylor (1980).

Former Rovers defender Trevor Jacobs was born on this day in 1946.

Paddy Hale made his Rovers debut on this day in 1953, a 3-0 home win against Leicester City.

Rory Gaffney, now with Walsall, made his first appearance in a Rovers shirt on this day in 2015 when on loan from Cambridge United. Rovers drew 1-1 against Exeter City at St James’ Park that day.

NOVEMBER 29TH

Happy Birthday to former Rovers skipper Adam Barrett, born on this day in 1979.

Former Rovers player Len Pickard was born on this day in 1924.

Alex Wall, now playing for Hemel Hempstead Town, made his Rovers debut on this day in 2014

NOVEMBER 30TH

Happy Birthday to former Rovers midfielder Chris Lines. Now playing for Northampton Town, Chris was born on this day in 1985.

Former Rovers players Randall Watkins and Harvey Sinclair were born on this day in 1921 and 1933 respectively.

Bradley Allen, Graham Hyde and Kevin Street made their Rovers debuts on this day in 2002, a 2-1 away defeat at Rushden & Diamonds.

Frankie Bennett’s first league appearance for Rovers was on this day in 1996, a 4-3 home win against Bury at the Memorial Stadium.

Martyn Britten made his Rovers debut on this day in 1974, a 1-0 home win against Bolton Wanderers.
