Rovers on this Day – January

Today we continue our new monthly feature by seeing what happened ‘on this day’ in January.

JANUARY 1ST

Happy Birthday to former Rovers striker Micky Evans, born on this day in 1973.

Les Bradd made his one and only appearance for Rovers, and a goalscoring one at that, on this day in 1983 when we were beaten 3-1 by Cardiff City at Ninian Park.

There were three Rovers debuts on this day in 2013 as Steve Mildenhall, Tom Hitchcock and John-Joe O’Toole were all in the side that beat Plymouth Argyle 2-1 at The Mem.

JANUARY 2ND

Happy Birthday to former Rovers striker Steve White and to former defender Mark Smalley, born on this day in 1959 and 1965 respectively.

Kenny Stephens made a goalscoring Rovers league debut on this day in 1971 when we were 4-0 winners against Barnsley at Oakwell.

Steve Harding’s debut for Rovers came on this day in 1978 when we were 3-2 winners against Cardiff City at Eastville.

Defender Aaron Downes and goalkeeper Michael Poke made their debuts for the Gas on this day in 2012 when we lost 2-0 against Barnet at Underhill.

JANUARY 3RD

Happy Birthday to former Rovers players Kenny Hibbitt and Frankie Bennett, born on this day in 1951 and 1969 respectively.

Goalkeeper Martin Thomas made his Rovers debut on this day in 1977, a 4-3 defeat against Charlton Athletic at the Valley.

Brian Cash made his one and only Rovers appearance, a brief one as a substitute, against Northampton Town on this day in 2005, a 3-1 win at the Mem.

JANUARY 4TH

Happy Birthday to former Rovers players Mike England and Scott Howie, born on this day in 1961 and 1972 respectively.

Former Rovers player Gordon Marsland died on this day in 2009.

JANUARY 5TH

Happy Birthday to tthree former Rovers players born on this day; Ashley Griffiths (1961), Geraint Williams (1962) & Luke Daniels (1988).

Mark McChrystal made his Rovers debut on this day in 2013, a 2-0 home defeat at the hands of Gillingham.

Former Rovers striker Ted Parsons died on this day in 1996.

JANUARY 6TH

Happy Birthday to former Rovers defender Luke Basford, born on this day in 1980.

Former Rovers player Craig Armstrong, on loan from Nottingham Forest, made his Rovers debut on this day in 1996, a 2-1 home win against Hull City.

Former Rovers defender Doug Hillard died on this day in 1997.

JANUARY 8TH

Happy Birthday to former Rovers players Louie Soares and Hiram Boateng born on this day in 1985 and 1996 respectively.

Happy Birthday, also, to current Rovers youngster Zain Walker who made his senior Rovers debut in the Checkatrade Trophy game down at Exeter last season.

Former Rovers forward Charles Windle was born on this day in 1917.

Shaun Byrne made his Rovers debut on this day in 2000 a 5-4 defeat against Colchester United at Layer Road.

JANUARY 9TH

Happy Birthday to former Rovers players Guy Branston and Lyle Della-Verde, born on this day in 1979 and 1995 respectively.

Liam Lawrence made his Rovers debut on this day in 2016 when we lost 1-0 against Barnet at The Hive.

JANUARY 10TH

Happy Birthday to former Rovers player Martin Boyle, born on this day in 1968. Martin never appeared in a league game for Rovers, but appeared in the FA Cup tie against Brentford in 1986 and Gloucester Cup Finals against Bristol City in December 1987 and March 1988

Former Rovers goalkeeper and physio Phil Kite made his debut on this day in 1981, a 2-1 defeat against Derby County at the Baseball Ground. It was the first of 96 league appearances for the Gas.

JANUARY 11th

Defender Brian Doyle made his Rovers debut on this day in 1958, a 2-2 draw at Eastville against Sheffield United.

Lee Maddison and Kevin Moore made their debuts for the club on this day in 1992, a 1-0 win against Tranmere Rovers at Twerton Park.

Goalkeeper Luke Daniels made his first appearance for Rovers on this day in 2011 in a 2-2 draw against Walsall at the Memorial Stadium.

Former Rovers player Cecil Steeds was born on this day in 1929.

Former Rovers player Ken Wookey died on this day in 2003.

JANUARY 12TH

Goalkeeper Gavin Kelly made his Rovers debut on this day in 1991, a 2-2 away draw against Charlton Athletic.

Former defender Tom Lockyer’s first appearance for the club came on this day in 2013 when he went on as a substitute at Fleetwood where we ran out 3-0 winners.

Former Rovers striker Victor Adeboyejo was born on this day in 1998, so a very Happy Birthday to him.

Rovers former Welsh international forward Dai Ward died on this day in 1996

JANUARY 13TH

Alan Wood, who was an amateur when he made his only Rovers appearance in 1962, was born on this day in 1941.

Goalkeeper Ian Bearpark was born on this day in 1939.

Damien Matthew made his Rovers debut on this day in 1996, a 2-2 draw against Swansea at the Vetch.

Lee Matthews made his Rovers debut in a 2-1 defeat against Macclesfield Town at the Moss Rose on this day in 2004.

JANUARY 14th

Happy Birthday to Rovers players born on this day; Guy Ipoua (1976), Fabian Broghammer (1990) and Tom Eaves (1992).

Former players Keith Williams  and Ray White were also born on this day, in 1937 and 1948 respectively.

Goalkeeper Laurie Taylor made his Rovers debut on this day in 1967 in a 4-1 home win against Colchester United.

On this day in 2006 Sammy Igoe made his Rovers debut in a 3-2 win against Cheltenham Town at Whaddon Road.

Joe Partington’s Rovers debut was on this day in 2017 in a 3-1 defeat against Fleetwood Town at the Highbury Stadium.

JANUARY 15TH

Happy Birthday to the following former Rovers players born on this day;Jon Beswetherick (1978), Jermaine Easter (1982) and Tom Parkes (1992).

Wilfred Smith, who appeared for Rovers in the league either side of World War Two, made his debut on this day in 1938, a 1-0 defeat at Mansfield Town.

Lee Portch never appeared in a league match for Rovers but made his senior debut in a Freight Rover Trophy tie against Hereford United on this day in 1986 which we lost 2-0.

JANUARY 16TH

Happy Birthday to the following former Rovers players born on this day; Tony Pulis (1958), Lee Matthews & Jamie Thomas (1979), Bobby Zamora (1981) and Derek Riordan (1983).

David Hudd made a goalscoring Rovers debut on this day in 1965, when we were 4-0 winners against Port Vale at Eastville.

Andy Thomson made his Rovers debut on this day in 1999, the famous 6-0 win at Reading.

JANUARY 17TH

Happy Birthday to former Rovers players born on this day; David Hurford (1945), Colin Gordon (1963), Che Wilson (1979) and James Tunnicliffe (1989).

Alan Routledge made his Rovers league debut on this day in 1981, a 2-0 away defeat at Grimsby Town.

Robbie Turner’s Rovers league debut came on this day in 1987 in a 2-2 away draw against Bolton Wanderers.

Former Rovers player Kenneth Powell died on this day in 2005.

JANUARY 18TH

David McCracken made his Rovers league debut on this day in 2011, a goalless draw against Hartlepool United at the Memorial Stadium.

Former Rovers player Ralph Jones died on this day in 1997.

Former Rovers and City defender Trevor Jacobs died on this day in 2014.

JANUARY 19TH

Happy Birthday to former Rovers loanee Elliott Ward, born on this day in 1985.

Former Rovers defender Geoff Fox was born on this day in 1925.

Cecil Steeds made his one and only league appearance for Rovers on this day in 1957 when we were beaten 7-2 by Leicester City.

JANUARY 20TH

Justin Richards made his league debut for Rovers on this day in 2001 in a 1-0 defeat at Reading.

Bernard Mensah’s league debut for the club came on this day in 2018, a 3-1 home win against Bradford City.

JANUARY 21ST

Happy Birthday to former Rovers loanee Shaun Byrne, born on this day in 1981.

Chris Lines made his Rovers league debut on this day in 2006, a 2-1 home win against Chester City.

Goalkeeper Joe Lumley made his league bow for Rovers on this day in 2017 in a 3-1 defeat at Walsall.

JANUARY 22ND

Happy Birthday to former Rovers player Steve Parmenter, born on this day in 1977.

Geoffrey Taylor, who made just three league appearances for Rovers, was born on this day in 1923.

Although he never appeared in a league game for Rovers, goalkeeper Mark Brain made his senior debut for the club in a Freight Rover Trophy tie against Swansea City on this day in 1985 when he went on as a substitute for Jon Hallworth. Rovers were beaten 2-0 in that game.

JANUARY 23RD

Happy Birthday to former Rovers striker Ben Hunt, born on this day in 1990.

JANUARY 24TH

Happy Birthday to former Rovers player Tarki Micallef, born on this day in 1961.

JANUARY 25TH

Happy Birthday to the former Rovers players born on this day, namely; Andy Gurney (1974), Jason Roberts (1978), Adam Virgo (1983) and Ricky Shakes (1985)

Former Rovers player Gordon Fearnley was born on this day in 1950.

Kaid Mohamed made a goalscoring Rovers league debut on this day in 2014, a 3-0 home win against Newport County, one of his former clubs.

JANUARY 26TH

Happy Birthday to former Rovers players Ian Alexander and Tom White, born on this day in 1963 and 1976 respectively.

Goalkeeper Jon Hallworth made his Rovers league debut on this day in 1985, a 3-2 away defeat at Reading.

Ryan Brunt’s Rovers league debut came on this day in 2013, a 3-1 win at Rotherham.

JANUARY 27TH

Happy Birthday to former Rovers players Rhys Evans and Mitch Harding, born on this day in 1982 and 1994 respectively.

Former Rovers assistant and caretaker manager Shaun North was born on this day in 1960, so it’s also Happy Birthday to him.

JANUARY 28th

Former Rovers player Marcus Browning made his Rovers league debut on this day in 1990 in a 1-1 draw against Bolton Wanderers at Twerton Park.

Ryan Sweeney’s league debut for Rovers came on this day in 2017, a 1-0 win against Swindon Town at the Memorial Stadium.

JANUARY 29TH

Happy Birthday to former Rovers players Jason Eaton and Ellis Harrison, born on this day in 1969 and 1994 respectively.

It’s also Happy Birthday to former Rovers defender, kitman and coach, Steve Yates who celebrates a milestone birthday today, having been born on this day in 1970.

Former Rovers player and World Cup winner Alan Ball made his league debut for the Gas on this day in 1983 when we beat Chesterfield 3-0 at Eastville.

Vitalijs Astafjevs made his Rovers league debut on this day in 2000, a 3-1 win against Wrexham at the Memorial Stadium.

Three players, Cian Bolger, Scott Davies and Rene Howe, made their league debuts for the club on this day in 2011 in a 6-1 defeat against Walsall at the Banks’s Stadium.

JANUARY 30TH

Happy Birthday to former Rovers players Justin Skinner and Moussa Dagnogo, born on this day in 1969 and 1972 respectively.

Former Rovers striker Rory Fallon made his league debut for the club on this day in 2016 when we lost 1-0 at Accrington Stanley.

JANUARY 31ST

Happy Birthday to former Rovers player Paul Miller, born on this day in 1968.

Happy Birthday, also, to goalkeeper Mark Stevens, born on this day in 1963. Mark didn’t appear in a league game for the club but did play in the Gloucester Cup Final aganst Bristol City in March 1988 when we lost 31 at Ashton Gate.

Granville Smith’s league debut for Rovers came on this day in 1959 when we were beaten 1-0 by Fulham at Craven Cottage.

Former Rovers players Jermaine Easter and Adam Dawson made their Rovers league debuts on this day in 2015 when we drew 2-2 at Dartford.
