Rovers on this Day – February

Today we continue our new monthly feature by seeing what happened ‘on this day’ in February.

FEBRUARY 2ND

Happy Birthday to former Rovers players Bob Lee and Martin Paul, born on this day in 1953 and 1975 respectively.

Legendary Rovers winger Peter Hooper was born on this day in 1933.

Wayne Brown made his Rovers debut on this day in 2010, a 5-0 defeat against Leyton Orient at Brisbane Road.

Current Rovers players Johnson Clarke-Harris and Abu Ogogo made their Rovers league debuts in a 2-1 win against Southend United at Roots Hall on this day in 2019.

FEBRUARY 3RD

Happy Birthday to these former Rovers players born on this day; Billy Foreman (1958), Mark Hughes (1962) and Stuart Nicholson (1987).

Keith Williams made a goalscoring Rovers league debut on this day in 1962 when we were 3-2 winners against Leyton Orient at Brisbane Road.

Current Rovers players Tony Craig and Kyle Bennett made their league debuts for the Gas on this day in 2018 when we were beaten 2-1 by Shrewsbury Town at the Memorial Stadium. Alex Rodman scored the winning goal for Shrewsbury that afternoon and Abu Ogogo and Stefan Payne were also in the Shrewsbury squad.

FEBRUARY 4TH

Happy Birthday to the former Rovers players born on this day; Granville Smith (1937), Jim Eadie (1947), Kevin Gall (1982), Sean Rigg (1988) and Reggie Lambe (1991).

Wayne Noble made his Rovers league debut on this day in 1986 in a 2-0 away win against Bolton Wanderers.

Carl Heggs made just five league appearances for Rovers when on loan from West Bromwich Albion, all away from home. The first of those games was a 1-1 draw against Huddersfield Town on this day in 1995.

Former Rovers defender George Peacock died on this day in 1984.

FEBRUARY 5TH

Happy Birthday to former Rovers defender Lee Martin, born on this day in 1968.

Gavin Williams and JP Kalala made their Rovers league debuts on this day in 2011 which ended in a 4-2 defeat against Brighton & Hove Albion at the Memorial Stadium.

FEBRUARY 6TH

Happy Birthday to former Rovers players Richard Crabtree and Jeff Meacham, born on this day in 1955 and 1962 respectively.

On this day in 1954, two days before his 18th birthday, Alfie Biggs made his Rovers league debut in a 2-1 win against Lincoln City at Sincil Bank.

Francis Joseph made the first of his three league appearances for Rovers in a 1-0 away defeat against Wigan Athletic.

FEBRUARY 7TH

Happy Birthday to former Rovers players Bo Henriksen and Neil Etheridge, born on this day in 1975 and 1990 respectively.

Tom White made his Rovers league debut on this day in 1995, a 2-1 win against Bradford City at Valley Parade.

Former Rovers player Joe Haverty died on this day in 2009.

FEBRUARY 8TH

Happy Birthday to former Rovers players Bryn Jones and Aidy Boothroyd, born on this day in 1948 and 1971 respectively.

Two former Rovers legends were also born on this day. Harry Bamford was born on 8th February 1920, while Alfie Biggs was born on this day in 1936.

Ijah Anderson made his Rovers league debut on this day in 2003 in a 2-2 draw against Southend United at Roots Hall.

Steven Gillespie and Alan Gow both made their Rovers league debuts on this day in 2013 in a 1-1 draw against Oxford United at the Memorial Stadium.

Former Rovers defender David Pyle died on this day in 2001.

FEBRUARY 9TH

Happy Birthday to former Rovers player Gary Pendrey, born on this day in 1949.

Graham Ricketts made his Rovers league debut on this day in 1957, a 3-0 win against Notts County at Eastville.

Steven Bailey and Errington Kelly made their first Rovers league appearance on this day in 1982, a 3-2 home win against Exeter City.

On this day in 2008 Anthony Pulis made his only league appearance for Rovers in a 2-0 defeat against Doncaster Rovers at the Keepmoat Stadium.

Paul Heffernan made his Rovers league debut on this day in 2010 when we lost 1-0 against Walsall at the Memorial Stadium.

FEBRUARY 10TH

Happy Birthday to former Rovers players Andy Rammell and Scott McGleish, born on this day in 1967 and 1974 respectively.

Former Rovers defender George Peacock was born on this day in 1924.

Carl Saunders and David Byrne made their Rovers league debuts on this day in 1990 in a 1-0 win against Preston North End at Deepdale.

Former Rovers striker Bill Roost died on this day in 2013.

FEBRUARY 11TH

Former Rovers forward Ray Seatherton made a goalscoring debut for the club on this day in 1956 when we beat Lincoln City 3-0 at Eastville.

Paul Bannon made his Rovers debut on this day in 1984 in a goalless draw against Orient at Eastville.

On this day in 2012 three players made their first league appearance for Rovers, namely Matt Lund, Tom Parkes and Jim Paterson. We were 2-1 home winners against Morecambe that day.

Former Rovers forward William Morgan died on this day in 1975.

Former Rovers midfielder Brian Godfrey died on this day in 2010.

FEBRUARY 12TH

Former Rovers midfielder Carlos Sanchez Lopez made the first of his six league appearances for the club on this day in 2002 when we lost 1-0 against Hartlepool United at the Memorial Stadium.

FEBRUARY 14TH

Former Rovers goalkeeper Dick Sheppard was born on this day in 1945.

‘Josser’ Watling made the first of his 323 league appearances for Rovers on this day in 1948 in a 5-2 defeat against Bristol City at Ashton Gate.

John Frowen made his Rovers debut on this day in 1959 in a 3-1 defeat against Sunderland at Roker Park.

Goalkeeper Tom McAllister made his Rovers league debut on this day in 1981 when we were 2-1 winners against Bolton Wanderers at Eastville.

David Whyte’s Rovers debut was on this day in 1998, a 1-0 defeat at Wrexham.

FEBRUARY 15TH

Happy Birthday to the following Rovers players born on this day; Josh Low (1979), Scott Shearer (1981), Tom Broadbent (1992), Alex Henshall (1994), Joe Lumley (1995).

Happy Birthday, also, to current Rovers player Alex Rodman, born on this day in 1987.

Julian Alsop made his Rovers league debut on this day in 1997 in a 3-2 win against Luton Town at the Memorial Stadium.

Daniel Jones made his first league appearance for the Gas on this day in 2010 when we were 2-1 winners against Charlton Athletic at the Memorial Stadium.

Former Rovers player Paul Bannon died on this day in 2016.

FEBRUARY 16TH

Two Rovers greats, Paul Randall and Rickie Lambert were born on this day, Paul in 1958 and Rickie in 1982, so Happy Birthday to them.

Happy Birthday, as well, to JP Kalala who was also born on this day in 1982.

Former Rovers player Ian Muir was born on this day in 1929.

Andrew Micklewright made his Rovers league debut on this day in 1952 in a 2-0 away defeat against Northampton Town.

Clayton McDonald’s league debut for Rovers was on this day in 2013 when we beat Wycombe Wanderers 1-0 at the Memorial Stadium.

FEBRUARY 17TH

Happy Birthday to former Rovers players Bobby Williams and Ali Gibb, born on this day in 1940 and 1976 respectively.

Former Rovers players Leonard Hodges and Joe Haverty were born on this day in 1920 and 1936 respectively.

Goalkeeper Jim Eadie kept a clean sheet on his Rovers league debut on this date in 1973 when we played out a goalless draw with Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park.

FEBRUARY 18TH

Former Rovers forward Lance Carr, who appeared for Rovers in the first post War season, was born on this day in 1910.

Johnny Burn and Bob Harris both made their first league appearance for Rovers in a 1-1 draw against Port Vale at Vale Park on this day in 2017.

FEBRUARY 19TH

Happy Birthday to former Rovers player Roy Carter, born on this day in 1954.

Roy James, who made just one league appearance for Rovers, was born on this day in 1941.

Goalkeeper Conrad Logan and defender Danny Senda made their first league appearance for Rovers on this day in 2011 in a 1-0 win against Oldham Athletic at the Memorial Stadium.

FEBRUARY 20TH

Happy Birthday to former Rovers players David Rushbury and Michael Adams, born on this day in1956 and 1965 respectively.

Former Rovers defender Robbie Pethick made his league debut for the club on this day in 1999 in a 1-0 home win against Luton Town.

Eliot Richards made his Rovers league debut on this day in 2010 in a 1-0 defeat against Gillingham at the Priestfield Stadium.

FEBRUARY 21ST

Former Rovers striker Len Drake, who would score once in eight league games for the club, made his league debut on this day in 1959 when we were 1-0 winners against Stoke City at Eastville.

FEBRUARY 22ND

Happy Birthday to former Rovers players Jefferson Louis and Fabian Speiss, born on this day in 1979 and 1994 respectively.

Three players, namely Michele Di Piedi, Lee Hodges and Chris Llewellyn, made their league debut for Rovers on this day in 2003 in a 1-1 draw against Macclesfield Town at the Memorial Stadium.

Former Rovers player Ian Muir died on this day in 2000.

FEBRUARY 23RD

Former Rovers forward Kenneth Wookey was born on this day in 1922.

Nathan Ellington made his league debut for Rovers on this day in 1999 in a 1-0 defeat against Gillingham at the Memorial Stadium.

Former Rovers defender Stanley Green died on this day in 2006.

FEBRUARY 24TH

Happy Birthday to former Rovers players Phil Roberts and Mark Wright, born on this day in 1950 and 1982 respectively.

Former Rovers defender John Hills was also born on this day, in 1934.

FEBRUARY 25TH

Happy Birthday to former Rovers striker Gareth Taylor, born on this day in 1973.

James Laing, who made just two league appearances for Rovers, was born on this day in 1920.

Defender Joe Davis and forward John Watkins made their league debut for Rovers on this day in 1961 when we were 4-1 winners against Luton Town at Eastville.

Wayne Jones made his league debut on this day in 1967 in a 4-2 win against Doncaster Rovers at Eastville.

FEBRUARY 26TH

Former Rovers striker John Rudge made his Rovers league debut on this day in 1972 in a 2-1 win against Walsall at Eastville.

On this day in 1991 Colin Gordon made the first of his four Rovers league appearances while on loan from Birmingham City. We lost 1-0 against Barnsley, at Oakwell, that day.

Rhys Evans and Nigel Pierre made their first appearance in a Rovers shirt on this day in 2000 when we were 4-1 winners against Oldham Athletic at Boundary Park.

There was a Rovers league debut for Ricky Shakes on this day in 2005 when we were beaten 2-1 by Macclesfield Town at the Moss Rose.

Jerel Ifil made his Rovers league debut on this day in 2011 in a 1-0 defeat against Brentford at Griffin Park.

FEBRUARY 27TH

On this day in 1954 Peter Wilshire made his Rovers league debut in a game against Leeds United at Eastville which we drew 1-1. It was to be his only league game for the club.

Two players, David Hillier and Martin Phillips, made their first league appearance for Rovers on this day in 1999, against Lincoln City at Sincil Bank which ended in a 1-0 defeat.

FEBRURY 28Th

Happy Birthday to former Rovers striker Chris Beardsley, born on this day in 1984. Now a member of the management team at Burton Albion, Chris was on the bench for the Brewers when we played at the Pirelli Stadium earlier this season.

Happy Birthday, also, to Sonny Parker who was born on this day in 1983.

Three players, namely Peter Cawley, Bob Newton and David Rushbury, made their league debut for Rovers on this day in 1987 when we played out a goalless draw against Notts County at Twerton Park.

Former Rovers player Mike Lyons died on this day in 2017.

FEBRUARY 29TH

Post Second World War Rovers have played only one game on this day, and that was in 1964 when were 1-0 winners against Shrewsbury Town at their former Gay Meadow ground. The cover of the programme from that game is reproduced here, along with a photo of Bobby Jones, who scored the only goal of the game.

Fast forward to 2020 and Rovers play on 29th February once again…and our opponents are, once again, Shrewsbury Town!  AND both games ended 1-0 to the away team.
